Happy Porcupine acupuncture
Happy Porcupine Acupuncture started in 2012 with the mission to help as many people as possible experience the healing benefits of traditional Chinese medicine. Our welcoming environment and gentle style allow you to have a positive and relaxing experience - one client described Jessica as "the most gentle acupuncturist I have ever worked with!" - and our affordable sliding scale makes sure that cost is not a barrier. Our passion is helping people feel better, and our clients have reported positive results for pain management, stress relief, skin issues, digestion, mood and energy.
After graduating with a degree in East Asian Studies and Chinese language in 2007 from Kalamazoo College (Kalamazoo, Michigan), Jessica headed to the other side of the globe to study Chinese medicine at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nanjing, China (南京中医药大学). She spent the next 5 years, 2007 to 2012, studying acupuncture, tuina (Chinese massage), herbology, and biomedicine with her 72 Chinese classmates.
In addition to many hours spent in the classroom, Jessica was privileged to study in the clinic under several distinguished traditional physicians, including Dr. Kui Tao of the Qinhuai TCM Hospital, Dr. Chen Honggen and Dr. Jianning Ren of the Jiangsu Province TCM Hospital, and Dr. Jianbin Zhang of Nanjing TCM University's Guoyi Clinic.
Jessica worked as an acupuncturist at the Zhaoyang Student Clinic of NJUTCM from 2009 - 2011, and was honored to receive the "5 Star Doctor" award in her final year. She also volunteered her time in the "Healthy Villages Project," a student group at NJUTCM which provides free traditional health care to villagers in poorer areas of the province.
Jessica graduated with honors in June of 2012 with a degree in Acupuncture and Chinese Massage, and was chosen to speak at the commencement ceremony. She returned to the U.S. in 2012, and successfully passed the exams required to become a NCCAOM certified diplomate of Oriental Medicine (Dipl.OM.). Jessica has been living in the Ann Arbor area since 2012, when she opened her practice, Happy Porcupine Acupuncture.
